In major dairying areas the most common portion of a lactating cow's diet is perennial rye grass and or white clover pasture. During winter and spring these pastures are very high in protein relative to readily available energy, creating a protein energy imbalance. This usually results in high levels of ammonia and then urea in the blood, body tissue and subsequently milk.
