Stud Cattle are a most important part of the Australian cattle industry as it is from the nucleus of studs that the commercial cattle industry takes it's genetic stock to produce for the various industries and markets. This may be live shipper cattle, cattle to feedlots for our domestic market or medium and long term fed cattle for the overseas markets.
It is therefore important or stud cattle to show their genetic potential for commercial breeders to assess and choose for their particular industry the breeding traits that they see as necessary for the long-term production. Feeding of these stud animals has a major influence on the their productivity and well being during their breeding life and the preparation for show or sale must be considered through all stages of weaning, grow-out, and conditioning for show or sale.
For many years now the nutritional requirements of livestock have been discussed and documented, and to have the stud animal meet those requirements we must take into consideration the feed that is available to the animal to determine what additional requirements are necessary to reach its genetic potential.
The pastures in Australia vary greatly from the Northern summer rainfall to the Southern winter rainfall. All these can be looked at as native or improved pastures, and mineral deficiencies must be taken into consideration when supplying supplements.
Native pasture and improved pasture are subject to seasonal conditions and feed quality and quantity are significantly affected by changing conditions. On improved pastures there is generally better quality due to fertilisers but in both cases the limiting factor will be protein and or minerals, which when fed will improve the performance of breeding and growing stock.
Weaners can be fed Molafos 'M' on green pasture or Molafos '12' or '15' on dry pasture. The products are fed in open troughs and are designed to allow the animal to have free access with an average intake of 1kg/day. Molafos will enhance rumen activity, digestion and provide essential minerals for grow-out.
The most common form of supplement is to grain feed, this is high in energy and will quickly condition livestock. However care must be taken in feeding grain as it can be nutritionally unbalanced and the likelihood of causing digestive problems must be considered. Rations must be developed to supply correct nutrition and lessen any incidence in feeding which may be to the animal's detriment in growth and condition. There is a broad range of Molafos liquid feed concentrates that are designed help to balance the ration and rumen modifiers can be included to improve feed conversion and performance.
